PowerColor HD 6870 X2 2 GB Review

The first observation at Computex this year, has designed a single board PowerColor HD 6870 HD 6870 X2. It combines two processors Barts käynnissä a graphics card CrossFire configuration. This approach allows PowerColor HD 6870 X2 to end up being classified as high-end graphics card that delivers performance, be prepared for 2560x1600 resolutions or multiple monitors.

As the HD 6870 X2 is not official AMD products, PowerColor could not rely on one of AMD's reference design for their card. This means that PowerColor has been to find a solution themselves, for example, are replaced by their PLX / AMD PCI-Express bridge chip provides a Lucid. What clock speed of the card following the frequencies set by the design stage HD 6870 - just two GPUs on one PCB supercharged.
The first line lists PowerColor HD 6870 X2 link to a very high price retail is $ 520, you can see in this review if the board can not justify that cost.

PowerColor is using their own dual fan heatsink design on the 6870 X2 which seems to have been designed exclusively for this card.

The card requires two slots in your system. Given the large width of the two slots it feels like the only place to hold the cards in their hands.

Display connection has two DVI ports, an HDMI ports and two standard size mini-DisplayPort outputs. Display output logic AMD is far superior to what Nvidia has to offer right now. Board partners are free to combine multiple TMDS link in any output configuration they want (dual-link DVI-consumption of two bonds) - and use them all simultaneously.

HDMI audio device is involved in the GPU, too. It 'compatible with HDMI 1.4a which includes a high-definition audio and support for Blu-ray 3-D movie. DisplayPort interface is a DisplayPort 1.2 compliant, which allows the use of DisplayPort hub to connect multiple displays or cascaded.

You can add more HD 6850/6870 cards for a Crossfire configuration with the HD 6870 X2. Thank you to Lucid Hydra chip on the table, it is also possible to combine this card with other cards ATI or NVIDIA, but this requires Lucid Hydra drivers do not work perfectly yet.

Above are pictures of the front and rear, to show to land on board. High resolution versions are also available (front, rear). If you decide to use these images voltmods etc., please include a link to this site, or let us send you the article.

A Closer Look:

PowerColor has sink and uses touch technology combines three direct heatpipe for the GPU core.

Two heat sinks are installed small metal to maintain voltage regulation circuits cool.

The board has two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. This configuration is good up to 375 watts of power consumption.

GDDR5 memory chips are made by Elpida and carry model number F-50-W1032BABG. Specified to operate at 1250MHz (5000 MHz GDDR5 effective).

Instead of the PLX/AMD-branded PCI-Express bridge chip that we have seen on AMD's dual GPU designs, PowerColor is using a Lucid LT22102 PCI-E switch. In addition to the normal PCI-E bridge capabilities it can also provide asymetric heterogenous multi-GPU load-balancing - when the Lucid Hydralogix driver is installed.

As a voltage regulator CHL8214 used. We have seen this before voltage regulator on several other cards. This is a good controller that also supports control via I2C voltage

Barth AMD graphics processing is done on a 40 nm process from TSMC in Taiwan. It uses about 1.7 million transistors on a die area of 255 mm ².
